Pitch at Grachtenfestival
15:10NedPho-Koepel, Obiplein 4, 1094 RB Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The Scroll Ensemble has been selected by De Grachtenfestival to present a pitch for a new way of performing concerts. We will present a 10-minute pitch on the 11th of February at 15:10 in the NedPho-Koepel. This is open to the public if you want to support us. If we are selected we will be invited to perform at the Grachtenfestival later this year.
About our pitch
Why is the audience being ostracised for using their mobile phone? For better or worse phones have become like a 5th limb for many people, so let’s use them! When they make a sound, these sounds will become part of the concert and our improvisation. What’s more, people will be able to influence elements of our improvisations using their phones.
For now you can read Rolling Stone’s 10 most annoying concert behaviours for comparison to pop concerts. We would love to hear from you or discuss with you on our Facebook page what you think about phones at concerts and having the ability to choose what a concert sounds like! -

An Wasserflussen Babylon
15:30-16:15AAFAB, Jeremiestraat 4-6, 3511 TW Utrecht, The Netherlands
According to the story, with his improvisation on the chorale melody “An Wasserflussen Babylon”, Bach paid homage to the older and revered J. A. Reincken on a visit and allegedly was praised by him as being the last foothold of this venerable art. He improvised for 3 hours without stopping. Reincken’s own version is extant thanks to a copy made by Bach himself and is also a good 20 minutes. With this programme we pay hommage to these men’s abilities and improvise our own version of “An Wasserflussen Babylon”. The whole concert will be based only on this one melody, flowing from part to part, from improvisation technique to idea, hoping to take you on a journey through this wonderful chorale.

All'Improvviso Vervolgcursus - Playford
10:00-17:00Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

[Closed event] Workshop Improvising with Telemann Fantasias at the Conservatory of The Hague
10:00-14:00Royal Conservatory of The Hague, Juliana van Stolberglaan 1, The Hague, The Netherlands
Telemann’s Fantasias for solo instruments are some of the most interesting pieces of its kind in this time. Although they are very much composed and there is little evidence of solo fantasia improvising for the gamba, wind instruments or even string instruments in this form, we are going to look into what we can learn from these Fantasias and provide a different perspective to this weekend of immersion in Telemann’s Fantasias.

Open Improvisation Session Classical Music 2! Pachelbel's Canon
14:30-16:00Koorenhuis Centrum
Prinsegracht 27
2512 EW Den Haag
The NetherlandsOne of the important and beautiful structures in music was used once by a composer called Pachelbel to write a canon for three violins and a bass. This piece, Pachelbel’s canon, has become a hit on most ‘Best of Classical Music” albums today and will be the topic of our next Open Improvisation Session for Classical Music!
The idea of the sessions is simple: anyone can improvise. Amateur musicians, professional musicians, and even just the general audience.
We just haven’t learned how to do it and that’s what we are going to change this season with our 8 improvisation sessions. If you can play the note “A”, you can already do the first assignment. If things get too difficult, just drop out. Also, there is no problem to keep learning at your own level. Because the underlying music is always repeating itself, you can keep doing an easier assignment even if others have moved on.
Beforehand there is a workshop to learn in more depth and online we have put together some material so you can learn the basics already at home:
In English: learn online
In Dutch: online leren -

The session itself is at 14:30 in the Foyer of the building.
