FREE COURSE ON 19TH-CENTURY IMPROVISATION
Improvising Potpourris
Any level and instrument welcome! If you can play Twinkle, twinkle little star, you are good! In terms of instrument I will say the focus is on melodic instruments. Keyboard players, pluckers, etc. can join, but I will not (or barely) talk about accompaniment / the left hand.
For my research I am organising a free workshop for anyone to join. In it you will learn the basics of improvising a Potpourri. We will learn some strategies to improvise simple variations, we will work on a small prelude-fantasia and on some bridges. You can also come to one of the workshops only.
The only thing I will ask of you is to fill in a little questionnaire to help me with my research!
The workshop will consist of three parts, each about 40 minutes on Zoom, with a pause of 20 minutes to practice, break or ask more questions online.
Workshop 1: Variations on Twinkle, Twinkle – Strategies for variations on any song
Workshop 2:Â Preludes and Cadenzas – How to introduce and link the different parts in your improvisation
Workshop 3: Potpourri and Fantasy – Putting together the variations on Twinkle, any songs you might know, through little preludes and cadenzas.
Workshop 1 can be done with microphone off. But I welcome anyone who would like to share their results. For Workshop 2 and 3 it would be great if some people would like to play something, to show how to develop these ideas.
