Music Machine

Wouldn’t you like to compose music?

Computers are a modern invention, but machines much like computers have been invented since antiquity. A seventeenth century composition machine, the “musical arch”, is described in Athanasius Kircher’s (1602-1680) Musurgia Universalis (1650). This arch (Arca Musurgica) could have any lay compose music, without knowledge of the techniques normally acquired over years.

The Scroll Ensemble takes the machine one step further and gives the audience the opportunity to compose their own piece.
