Michael Christian Festing and Thomas Augustine Arne–who heard Handel improvise during a performance of the oratorio Athalia in Oxford in 1733.
Burney also mentions the improvisation of movements within the concertos, “an extempore fugue, a diapasonpiece, or an adagio.”
